ETHANOL PLANT

What is ethanol, how it is prepared ?

Ethanol, also known as ethyl alcohol, grain alcohol, or simply alcohol, is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3CH2OH, It's a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid with a characteristic wine-like odor and pungent taste.

Ethanol is the active ingredient in alcoholic drinks and is also used as a solvent, in the synthesis of other organic chemicals, and as an additive to automotive gasoline.

Uses of ethanol:

Ethanol acts as a solvent in cosmetics, paints, and cleansing solutions, and a common ingredient in lotions and serves as a preservative.

  • In Many Countries, ethanol is used as an engine fuel.

  • Gasohol (E10): A blend of ethanol and gasoline.

  • E85: An 85% ethanol blend for flexible-fuel vehicles.

  • Ethanol is used for sterilization and disinfection.

  • It's an ingredient in cough syrup, tonics, and tincture of iodine.

  • Ethanol can serve as an antidote for methanol and ethylene glycol poisoning.

  • Ethanol is the intoxicating component in beer, wine, and spirits.

Ethanol Production Process

In India, ethanol is primarily produced from sugarcane molasses through a fermentation process. However government has started promoting grain based ethanol plants in India

Step 1. Feedstock Selection: Sugarcane Molasses: Sugarcane molasses serves as the primary source of ethanol in India. It is a by-product of the sugar industry. Other Starch Sources: Additionally, ethanol production may utilize starches from potatoes, corn, wheat, and other plants. However, these starches must first be broken down into simple sugars.

Step 2. Fermentation Process:  Starch to Sugar: If starch-containing feedstock (such as maize or wheat) is used, it must undergo a process to convert starch into sugars. An enzyme called **diastase**, produced by germinating barley, plays a crucial role in this transformation.

Step 3. Distillation: Once the feedstock provides simple sugars, fermentation occurs. Yeast microorganisms consume these sugars, producing ethanol as a result. Which is then separated through Distillation

Step 4. Ethanol Blending: Fuel Ethanol: Ethanol is blended with gasoline to create different fuel blends. Ethanol can be mixed with petrol at any percentage up to 100% (E100).
